On April 3, for the first time in more than 20 years, the Las Vegas Review-Journal stopped publishing the Las Vegas Sun as an insert in its daily newspaper, as well as in its online version.
The action came as a result of a series of court rulings that voided the newspapers’ 2005 joint operating agreement (JOA) due to the fact that the JOA was never formally approved by the U.S. attorney general as required under the 1970 Newspaper Preservation Act.
During an era when many cities had two or more daily newspapers, hardly the case any more, the ones published in the morning were almost always financially stronger than those published in the evening, regardless of the editorial slants of the respective newspapers. JOAs helped to save financially distressed newspapers by allowing them to merge business operations—such as printing, circulation and advertising—while maintaining separate, competitive editorial staffs.
In Las Vegas, as most everyone knows, the morning R-J has a conservative editorial philosophy, while the afternoon/evening Sun has a liberal editorial policy and is the only Las Vegas newspaper to have won a Pulitzer Prize for its journalism.
For now, at least, the Sun continues to publish daily online at lasvegassun.com, and it maintains a social media presence. But it remains to be seen if it will be able to continue as a viable business entity.
Memo to climate change and global warming deniers:
From 1937 to 2003, the month of March in Las Vegas saw only one day when the temperature reached at least 90 degrees. That was it, just one day!
From 2004 to 2025, there were 12 additional 90-degree days in March.
That’s a total of only 13 90-degree days in 88 years.
In the month of March just ended, there were 12 days of at least 90-degree temperatures. This means that the past month recorded just one day short of half of all March 90-degree days in the past 89 years.
The complete absence of rainfall didn’t help, either.
